Biografie

Alfred S. Upton was a Canadian photographer, practicing from 1920 to 1995. Born in Southport, England in 1898, arriving in Toronto before the age of 12. He began photographing as a hobby about that time, after being given an Ensign roll film camera, which he used to photograph his family. In the 1920's, Upton began publishing photographs in British and American photogrpahy magazines and winning awards, such as the one given by Photo Era Magazine for a vignette portrait of his sister.

Upton worked in the insurance industry, working as President, Managing Director, and Director of several different companies, and the Chief Executive Officer of Dominion Life from 1945 to 1965. Photography was a great stress relief for Upton, particularly printing, all of which he did in a home darkroom. Much more than a hobbiest, he received many honours, including the distinction of Associateship of the Royal Photographic Society, which he received in 1972. Upton's work has been published in many magazines and exhibited throughout Canada and in England.

Alfred S. Upton died in 1995, in Toronto, Ontario.
