In 1971 a feasibility study investigated the possibility of demolishing the existing church and placing it in the body of a multi-storied high rise complex designed by Arthur Erickson. Although the redevelopment was supported by the majority of the
congregation, it was opposed by the public, and after much lobbying, in 1976 the cathedral was named a
Heritage building in the municipality of Vancouver and the Province of British Columbia. Architecture firm on the project was Erikson/Massey Architects of Vancouver, B.C.

Lantern slide, wood frame with glass positive B & W slide - image framed in black and gold. Handwritten in ink "455 Interior Milan Cath." - sticker says that slide was manufactured by "T.H. McAllister, Manufacturing Optician, 49 Nassau Street, N.Y." - slide is dated at c. 1880s because that is when McAllister started selling lantern slides. Wood frame has a sticker on it with the letter Y written inside.

Seven Wonders of the World, View-master Reel
Item is a set of wheel type stereographs that depict the wonders of the world. Each wheel focuses on a different set of wonders: ancient, modern, or natural and the list describing what each wheel portrays is on the back of the packet. Also comes with a 16 page color illustrated booklet.
Glass slide. No frame. Black paper covering edges. White frame around image. Handwritten in ink on verso "High St. looking W. from Knox Ho." and in print "T.J. Walls, Optician, 12 Forrest Rd, Edinr." - T.J. Walls still exists today as an optician at 35 Forrest Rd, Edinr. Image is a street scene with clock tower, and another spire in distance. The title refers to the Knox house, one of Edinburgh's oldest houses and was supposedly once the home of Protestant Reformer John Knox. Dominating the skyline are the spires of the Tron Kirk and the High Kirk of St Giles where Knox preached his famous sermons.
Item consists of a photograph mounted on white card with black letterpress at bottom edge, reading from left to right "J. Russell & Sons/ Photographers", "By special appointment to/ His Majesty the King.", "17, Baker Street. W. &/ 13, High St. Windsor." Photograph shows a long gothic style hall (probably the nave of a cathedral) laid out with tables for dining, and men seated at all the tables. Handwritten in pencil on the verso, "25.00" and "797113".
