Wooden plaque of Lenin in high contrast

shiny lacquered wood plaque bearing a portrait of Lenin created by different coloured wood stains. His face is rendered in high contrast as if there was a strong light shining from the left hand side. Label afixed to back. It was produced in Lutsk, Ukraine. It is named "Portrait of V. I. Lenin."

Small statue, composed of a metal alloy, shows the figure of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin seated on what appears to be a tree stump. He holds a rolled paper in his left hand. A piece of paper, probably the manufacturer's stamp, is adhered to the bottom of one of the statues. The second statue has glue residue in the same location, indicating a similar paper was adhered but removed. The cast was created in 1986. It cost 17 rubles.

Front section of Soviet Russian newspaper containing 6 pages of text and halftone images. Identified as issue no. 313 (21282). Newspaper title is flanked by crests of Lenin and a military star type crest. The images include that of a press conference at Lenin's mausoleum, a large protest or march with crowd members holding banners depicting Lenin, military excercizes and parades, and entertainer playing the accordion. On the front page, the main story's title reads: Under the banner of Lenin - dear October! Reporting about the parade and demonstration of workers on Red Square. The title of the story below it reads: Holiday reception at the Kremlin's Palace of Congresses. The last story is titled: A Speech by Comrade L. I. Brezhnev. It is on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the October Revolution. On page 2, the main story from the front page is continued. Pictures of the parade depict soldiers marching and war technology. The story on the right-hand side is about the parade march to the palace. On page 3, the title reads: Unity, Brotherhood, Cohesion: Holiday Celebrations in the Capitals of Union Republics. Set of Matrioshkas painted with Soviet political figures

Painted wooden nesting or Matrioshkas dolls of Russian Communist leaders. Mikhail Gorbachev is the first and largest doll, inside which in succession are the leaders: Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev, Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev, Joseph Stalin, Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, Semyon Budyonny, Lavrentiy Beria, Sverdlov and Sailor Zeleznyak, leaders potentially of the Russian Revolution. The bottom of the Gorbachev doll has an inscription. Nine dolls in total. The Gorbachev doll has writing in Russian and English with the following messages: "Perestroika! Democracy! Glasnost! Gorbachev, the Father of the Region! USSR + USA = Love! I love Gorbi!" He is holding a set of papers entitled "New Thinking" and Gorbachev is listed as the author. The Brezhnev has Russian and English writing that reads: "Glory to the CPSU! Dear Leonid Ilyich! Party mind, honour and conscience! The party and the people are united! Russkaya Russian Vodka." The Khrushchev doll depicts him at a United Nations podium and he is holding a shoe. The writing around him reads: "Corn! Socialism! Cosmos! Accommodations!" The Stalin doll is holding a pipe and it reads: "Great VOKD! Father of the People!" The Lenin doll depicts him wearing a red ribbon and writing on the doll reads: "Peace to the People! Revolution!" The Beria doll depicts him holding a newspaper with the word "Business" on it and he's wearing a red armband with the letters TsK, which stand for Central Committee.

Porcelain Decree of Peace commemorative plate

Commemorative white porcelain plate with gold trim and writing, with image of Vladimir Illyich Lenin and the sickle and hammer, and a boat. The writing is in Old Russian, which reads: 70 decree of peace, adopted unanimously at the All-Russian Congress of Workers', Soldiers' and Peasants' Deputies 26 October 1917. It was created in the German Democratic Republic by Weimar.

Scrapbook about Lenin

Scrapbook with hand written text, compositioned with glued photographs of Lenin and printed text. There is a separate letter written in Russian by a pioneer dated May 20, 1970. It was written in Gera, Germany. The pioneer is grateful for the parcel and letter that they had received. They also describes their participation in the concert for Lenin's 100 anniversary, which included folk dancing, music, gymnastics and Russian poetry reciting about Lenin and the USSR. Most of the text is in German, with some Russian. The FDJ (Free German Youth) logo is featured on the last page along with Soviet and German flags.

Egypt album

Brown cardboard album is bound with string. Affixed to the front cover is a watercolour of a man and a camel at the base of the Pyramids. Inserted into the 12 paper pages are photographs of wartime Egypt. There are two loose prints: one of a guard tower, and the other of a shield that reads "Patience!! NOUS te PLUMERONS." Also included are 2 postcards: one is of the H.M.H.S. Asturias, and is addressed to Mrs. Wm. Lawler, of Vancouver, B.C.; the other is a group portrait of soldiers, and is addressed to Mrs. E. Shaw, also of Vancouver.

Eastman's Squeegee album

"Photographs" is embossed in black ink on the tan clothe-bound album cover. There are 50 spaces for photographs on the 26 pages, and the 38 extant images are of people at work and play in rural and urban areas. A sticker on the last, empty page reads “Eastman’s Squeegee Album, for 3 ½ x 3 ½ pictures, style A, manufactured by Eastman Kodak Co., Rochester, NY.”

Only Dick Gossett, Alan Pride, Bill McMillan, Duncan Wallace, and Minnie (Wallace) Owens are identified. One photograph of young men is entitled "Bolsover Flirts."

154 photographs affixed to 24 black paper pages, 11 loose prints--the album cover itself is absent. The photographs have primarily vernacular images: snapshots of individuals and small groups, individual and group portraits, vacation scenes. Captions and dates are in white pencil: "1929," "Pt. Stanley 1937," "Wingham 1937," "Cub Camp 1939," "Churchill 1940-1," "Lake Joseph," and "Natural Park." On the verso of one photograph is partially written "Dear Gertrude,-This is a picture...of our new home...Mildr(ed?)" A truck is shown painted with "...S TAXI CABS, 2400 CHATHAM." A boat is shown painted with "The 100 Mile Cruiser To NATURAL PARK, SAGAMO." A park entrance gate made of tree branches spells out "CAMP TINAWATAWA, YWCA, YMCA." On a page entitled "Camp 1921" the prints have been typed on "Lake Couchiching." One loose print is written on verso "May 1963."

Print is captioned "Motherhood." It depicts a woman in a white fur-trimmed robe holding an infant in a white blanket. On verso, the work is identified as a Glaxo Baby Book advertisement. The envelope is addressed, Canadian-stamped, and cancelled.

Tan envelopes are printed in black with "B. Frank Stewart, Kodaks and Amateur Supplies, Orillia, Ontario." Most of the photographs are undated snapshots of unidentified individuals and groups posed indoors and out, and images of farm animals, buildings, Niagara Falls and landscapes. Two photographs are dated on verso as "Sept. 1919", and "Jan. 1921." Four photographs are written in ink on verso "Jim Ross and Watson Matheson", "Catherine Ann (McFayden) Wallace", "Bolsover Sunday School Picnic", "Hugh McIntyre and family members."

Barn raising, boating, and other outside pursuits

These photographs share few similarities in image content besides all being taken out-of-doors. Four images show a barn raising, and sixteen images are of boats, including the "Stoney Lake" and the "Modello." One photograph is of a man in a wheatfield--written on verso is "What do you think of this for Western Wheat 10 mi.'s from Regina?" The other photograph written on verso is of a man and an airplane--"Douglas Lindsay out on the Sask. River Jan. 15 / 36 at Prince Albert where the fish bask from Leechee (sp?) Rouge is situated."

Canterbury cathedral and girl

Two pairs of photographs originally grouped together. Two photographs are of a girl seated on a miniature chaise longue in front of garden wall, and two photographs are of the interior of Canterbury Cathedral. The cathedral photographs have both been written on verso in pencil "Canterbury Cathedral," and individually in ink, "Presbytery and Archbishop Bourchier's Tomb" and "Effigy of the Black Prince from his Tomb."

Minstrel show group portrait

Item is a group portrait of a minstrel show. 42 performers, including children and adults, are posed seated or standing on a stage. Six of the performers appear in blackface, wearing makeup and wigs.

Minstrel shows are a style of variety show, most popular during the late 19th and early 20th century, in which white performers use make-up and costumes to depict racist and stereotypical caricatures of Black people. The genre originated in the United States, but Canada had its own troupes and touring companies, and the format was popular with schools, community groups, and religious organizations.

A two-page hand-written eulogy was found with the photograph that begins "Ella Roberts age 85 years of Galena, Ohio died November 28, 1949..."

Item is a photographic enlarger consisting of nine parts; a metal base, two shafts, one bellows/negative holder assembly with red filter, lens assembly, lamp with cord, and three cardbooard negative guides. Book-shaped contraption resembles a mono version of a stereoviewer. It has a green leather cover with the word "MICROPHORE" in gold letterpress on the spine. A two-part metal clasp releases a lid. When opened, a spring-loaded lens is aimed at an assembly of cotton loops that could attach to small photographs.

Chromatropes

Chromatrope devices consist of a wood frame, a metal winding mechanism, a tiny wood crank handle, and colour-patterned layers of glass that, when turned, resemble the optical effects of a kaleidoscope. Used for projection.

Binocular viewer is brown plastic, with black metal slide at the bottom for reel advancement. The eye pieces are fitted with transparent lenses for viewing images against translucent plastic backs--these allow ambient light to illuminate the images from behind. Molded into the body of the viewer is "TRU-VUE, ROCK ISLAND ILL, MADE IN U.S.A., U.S. PAT. 90564", and "INSERT FILM THIS END" (left side). The two-piece cardboard box has a silver top printed with the Tru-Vue logo in black, and a black bottom printed with "Tru-Vue Inc., Pictures With Depth, Rock Island, Illinois, printed and made in U.S.A." in silver.

Wood box has sliding lid and is covered with patterned brown paper. Nine of the glass slides are painted with scenes of children engaged in play and work, and one includes the phrase "Good Night." Blue and clear plastic case contains a self-timer, an adaptor, and instructions. The self-timer is metal, and has "MOD. ll" in red, and a red and ivory painted plate with the words "KOPIL, MADE IN JAPAN." The instructions are on blue vellum.

Camera is made of wood: a two-part hinged frame supports a hinged lens assembly and hinged contact frame. The lens assembly includes a leather and felt lens cap. There is also a metal-ringed glass lens and a small metal key loose inside the camera body.

Toronto Pearson International Airport, Old Terminal 1

Interior and exterior of the development of the Toronto International Airport, showing photographs of planes, baggage claim, parking garages. Design drawings were published in the May 1958 issue of Canadian Architect. The airport was originally known as the Malton Airport, opened in 1937, and was redeveloped as an International Airport in the 1960s, and renamed in 1984 for former Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson.

Montreal, Pointe-à-Callière, Montréal Museum of Archeology and History, Éperon building

The Éperon building was constructed to complement the existing historic architecture of the area, and was built to match the proportions of the Royal Insurance Company building that was previously on the site. The building matches the roof lines of the other structures on the Rue de la Commune, and the tower building (pictured) is an easily identifiable element in the museum complex.
