Ryerson Rambler magazine

This Ryerson publication was mailed to the Ryerson community and alumni. The collection is not complete ; there are no issues for 1972 and a few issues appear to be missing from the 1960s.

In 1997 the name was changed to Ryerson Magazine, with the first issue appearing in the Spring of that year. A further name change occurred in 2022 to Toronto Met University Magazine (see Related materials below for a link.)

Technikos magazine

The magazine was mailed to alumni once or twice a year, keeping alumni up-to-date on the happenings of the school. Only 10 issues were published before another alumni magazine replaced it by "The Ryerson Review".

A. 1977 - The "Annex" Architecture building in flames and the fire aftermath, including the drying of books and journals.

B. 1977-1978 - School of Architecture at 720 King St. W. with faculty and students in process of architectural design (1977) ; official opening (1978) ; student projects.

C. 1973, 1982 - Student award winners.

D. 1981 - Official opening of the Hester How Day Care Centre at Toronto's City Hall with Brian Segal (University President), Paul Godfrey (Metro Chairman), and Arthur (Art) Eggleton (Toronto Mayor). The playground equipment was designed and constructed by TMU (formerly Ryerson) first year Architecture students.

Energy Centre related records

File contains records relate to Helmut Burkhardt's work with the Ryerson Energy Centre. Topics include Thermoelectricity; alternate energy library; solar energy; and Continuing Education course "An introduction to the The Science and Politics of Energy". Included in the file is correspondence, meeting minutes, forms and other materials related to the topics mentioned previously.

File contains agenda, minutes and notes related to the Ryerson Energy Centre executive committee meetings held in 1980. Also included in the file are an Energy Centre brochure, and a brochure for the TOTEM (Total Energy Module) cogenerator.

Presentation to Porter Commission, 1977

The Royal Commission on Electric Power Planning was chaired by Dr. Arthur Porter and was referred to as the Porter Commission. An interim report on nuclear power in Ontario titled "A Race Against Time" was published in 1978.
The file includes a copy of a part of a submission authored by Helmut Burkhardt and R. Szmidt for the commission, a page and folder of handwritten notes, and an unrelated letter from the University of Regina regarding the formation of their Energy Research Unit.

Ryerson Energy Centre, 1976

File contains records related to the formation of the Ryerson Energy Centre in 1976. Included are planning documents, correspondence, and meeting minutes. Also included is a copy of the 2nd edition of the Centre's newsletter.

Architecture Building

Several photos of the architecture building at 325 Church Street prior to, during and after the complete build; as well as, the Official Opening on October 14, 1981, which documents the arrivals of John B. Aird and Bill Davis, the opening reception, speeches, tour, and dinner with some dignitaries and special guests being served at a table. Dignitaries in attendance were :

Energy and Lifestyle - Shaping the Future conference

File created and maintained by Helmut Burkhardt. The conference, sponsored by the Forum of Toronto Arts Productions and ATEED Centre for Environmental Communities, was proposed to have been held October 21 - 22, 1978 at the St. Lawrence Centre.
File includes planning documents and a draft program of events.

Scitec Conference 1981 - Ontario Science Centre

File created and maintained by Helmut Burkhardt in his role as Chairman of the program committee for the 1981 SCITEC conference. The SCITEC (The Association of the Scientific Engineering and Technological Community of Canada) annual general meeting and conference was held at the Ontario Science Centre November 8, 9, 10, 1981. The conferences theme was "Education for Survival and Prosperity".
The file contains correspondence, conference programs, new releases and other records related to the SCITEC conference.

Canadian Energy Exposition 1980

File contains a poster for the "Canadian Energy Exposition - energy in the eighties...the choice is ours" and a pin featuring the expo's logo with the word "Exergy" underneath. The pin is attached to cardstock with information about energy/exergy and the address Ryerson's Energy Centre on the back.

Business - Hanoi University book donation

File contains photographs and negatives of the business book donations for the Foreign Trade University in Hanoi. Wilde 1982 was the Lesbian and Gay History Conference, held at Ryerson on June 30-July 3, 1982. The event was co-sponsored by the Canadian Gay Archives and Doing It! Gay Liberation in the '80's.

Harold Brillinger

Harold Brillinger in the following activities :

  • June 1978 graduation, in the graduand procession and later with his B.A.A. degree in Photographic Arts.
  • 1980, teaching tap dancing in the Summer at Ryerson, Physical Education skills program; and a formal portrait of his students. A few of these images were published in Ryerson's "The Rambler", October 1980.
