Return to the Titanic - live from Paris [Tape 1 of 2]

A documentary that covers many aspects of the Titanic legacy beginning at the ships conception and ending with artifacts recovered from the wreck. The topics also cover differing theories of loss, interviews with survivors and the technology involved in divine the Titanic. An account of the ships descent is reiterated while showing the locations of events on the ship at its present state at the bottom of the North Atlantic Ocean. These documentary and recovery dives to the Titanic were done using the Nautile submersible.

The Titanic, a passenger ship, sunk during her maiden voyage in the North Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912, two hours and forty minutes after a collision with an iceberg on April 14, 1912. Over 1 500 people perished. The shipwreck was discovered by a team led by Robert Ballard and Jean Louis Michel in 1985.

Titanic: Treasures of the Deep

The film is a documentary account of the preparation and descent of the Russian submersibles MIR 1 and MIR 2 into the depths of the Titanic. Hosted by Walter Cronkite. The film begins with a merger of underwater technology between North Americans and Russians, a technology pioneered by the Russians. Following this, a team of researchers, explorers, photographers, filmmakers and scientists board the Russian ship Akademik Keldysh on route to explore the Titanic. Two submersibles are launched on a 24-hour day schedule and the images recorded are extraordinary. The film then focuese on the treasures found in the deep; ceramics, coins, an unopened safe, as well as parts of the ship that were at this time previously unexplored and provide clues to the sinking of this massive ship.

Edmund Fitzgerald

The items in this series all have to do with the ship the Edmund Fitzgerald, which sank in Lake Superior on November 10th, 1975. The recordings concern the 1994 expedition led by Dr. MacInnis and his team’s efforts to find an answer for the demise of the vessel. Included are all stages of the cinematic process from raw footage to feature length films, as well as television and radio interviews about the ship and the process of recording the ship.

This tape contains three distinct segments of footage. The first consists of unedited footage of the launch of a Newt Suit dive unrelated to the Edmund Fitzgerald expedition. The second consists of unedited but directed footage of a man, presumably John McCarthy, and an unidentified woman along a walkway close to the lake. The third part features Ruth Hudson, whose son Bruce was a crew member on the Edmund Fitzgerald. She was filmed both outside and inside her home, and is shown with a photo of Bruce.

Launching of S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald

This silent film shows the launch of Hull 301 (Edmund Fitzgerald), built by Great Lakes Engineering Works in 1958. There are several crowd shots, presumably of people who came to watch the ship being launched. Footage consists of pre-launch shots of the ship's flag and hull, as well as the launch itself.

The submersible is also seen using a remote arm to collect unidentified items from the lake floor.

This tape consists of three different segments of footage. The first shows a submersible beginning its dive from the perspective of a scuba diver (responsible for guiding it initially?) holding a video camera. The second segment is a shot of waves alongside a ship's hull caused by the ship's movement through the water. The third and final portion of the tape shows two males and one female on board a submersible. They are navigating around the starboard bow of the Edmund Fitzgerald wreck, discussing what they are seeing.

Edmond [sic] Fitzgerald - Bell Ceremony

This tape contains two unrelated segments of unedited footage. The first 3 minutes and 50 seconds consists of parts of the Edmund Fitzgerald bell ceremony, during which the names of the crew members who perished on board the ship were read and family members were invited to come up to the stage and ring the ship's bell. The ceremony also consisted of speeches and an amateur bagpiper's performance of Amazing Grace. The second part of the tape shows the process of launching and retrieving manned submersibles from a ship (most likely either HMCS Cormorant or the Edwin Link).

This tape consists of unedited, incomplete footage of the Edmund Fitzgerald bell ceremony commemorating the shipwreck and honoring the the crew members whose lives were lost. Portions of the speeches are shown, as well as segments of the bell-ringing part of the ceremony.

This tape consists of four separate segments of unrelated, unedited footage. The first shows an unidentified industrial interior (probably a ship) and lasts approximately two minutes. The second portion contains 28 minutes of footage of a woman being directed to walk around the exterior of the ship Mapleglen in a ship yard. The third segment was filmed on the HCMS Cormorant and shows the replacement bell for the Edmund Fitzgerald (inscribed with the names of the lost crew members), and a group of schoolchildren being told about the wreck and the significance of the bell. It is six minutes and 46 seconds long. Lastly, the fourth segment contains footage of a nighttime submersible launch, as well as footage of a Newt Suit on board a ship.

Edmund Fitzgerald footage #2

The footage on this tape was taken on the ships HMCS Cormorant and Anglian Lady during the project to recover the Edmund Fitzgerald's bell (to be housed at the Whitefish Point memorial at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum) and install a replacement bell, inscribed with the names of the lost crew members, on the wreck. On the Cormorant, crew members are seen at the controls, communicating with pilot and observer(s) in a manned submersible, either the SDL or the Pisces. After the sub was recovered onto the Cormorant, interviews were conducted with a representative from Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute and the Cormorant's Senior Diving Officer about the significance of recovering the bell. The footage from the Anglian Lady is primarily of the recovery of the Edmund Fitzgerald bell and the Newt Suit diver who retrieved it.

The film is an episode of "Walter Cronkite's Universe". Cronkite joins a team in the Alvin (a Deep Submergence Vehicle) to the ocean floor to view the thermal vents and aquatic life of the Oceanic Ridge. Crinkite interviews geologist Robert Ballard on the topography of the ridges. Footage is shown of Cronkite boarding ships, entering the Alvin and diving down to the ocean floor. A crate full of deep sea aquatic animals is raised to the ship deck where marine biologists study and experiment on the different animals.

The news segment is of a CBS Morning News inteview of MacInnis conducted by Diane Sawyer. The interview discusses a diving team, lead by MacInnis, searching for and investigating the Breadalbane shipwreck. The Breadalbane sank in 1853 when it became trapped in ice in the Northwest Passage. It is considered the northern most shipwreck. During the expedition, MacInnis and his team photographs the wreckage, studies the biological and geological aspects of the ship. Footage include MacInnis and his team setting up camp in the Arctic, divers Phil Newton and Doug Osbourne in a "Wasp Suit" and images of the shipwreck.

Item is to be used with the Model PB-4 Bellows for duplication of 35mm slides or film strips. The bellows are folded into the adapter unit and is kept in place out of sight with a magnet to protect it from damage. The PS-4 can also be used with the PB-5 bellows.
