Western section, Gardiner Expressway, concept drawings

Illustrations showing an idealized reconstruction of the section of the Gardiner Expressway between Bathurst Street and Sunnyside Pavilion (near the base of Parkside Drive), extending to the waterfront. Drawings include the addition of a new waterfront park, viewing platforms hung under the raised expressway, Front Street is extended to the west, and an amusement pier at Sunnyside. The designs were commissioned as part of an OAA Charrette, and the images were published in the July 1987 issue of Canadian Architect magazine.

Weno Hawk-Eye No. 7

Item is a Weno Hawk-Eye No. 7 box camera by the Blair Camera Division of the Eastman Kodak Company. The wood box is covered with seal grain morocco leather with brass and nickel trimmings. It has a fixed focus achromatic meniscus lens with rotary shutter and set of three stops, two tripod sockets and brilliant finders. The camera uses No. 3A Folding Pocket Kodak film to take 3.25 x 5.50 inch exposures.

At the bottom of the inside mount,at the right in grey letterpress "HENRY MAR/ CHINESE PHOTOGRAPHER/ RED DEER, ALTA." Handwritten in ink at the bottom left, "Lovingly,/ Elmer & Eleanor/ June 25,/ 49."

Ways Lane Residence

File contains photographs depicting the interior and exterior of the Ways Lane Residence. The photos highlight the materiality of the home, which includes wood framed windows and slats on the exterior, and custom millwork in the interior. The home is in a modern minimalist style and is mainly unfurnished save for a few photographs, plants, and some seating in the living room. Photos are taken at day and at night to capture the full range of lighting effects.

Watercolour outfit for hand-colouring photographic prints. The tan cardboard box has a tan label printed with black ink: "VELOX TRANPARENT WATERCOLOR STAMP OUTFIT." Included in the box is a plastic palette and an instruction booklet with colour stamps separated by vellum sheets labeled: "LIGHT YELLOW, FOLIAGE GREEN, DEEP YELLOW, DEEP GREEN, FLESH TINT, LIGHT BLUE, BRILLIANT RED, DARK BLUE, SCARLET, VIOLET, WARM BROWN, STONE GRAY." There is an empty tray for brushes.

WWI family album

Brown cloth cover with gold embossed letters- "Photographs." Black pages with photographs mounted with glue. Notation on photo borders with black ink. Sewn binding. Photographs are mostly family snapshots of people, sometimes with automobiles or in uniform from the Northcote family. Also included are images of golfing, bridges, fishing, horse riding, camping, farms, cattle, sheep, chicken coops, horse drawn sleigh, the beach, trees, houses, dogs, trains, children, biking, deer and wagons. Three newspaper articles are pasted in. One about the Northcote family (mother, six sons and two daughters) all serving in the war, one about Pte. Wm. Clements dying in battle, and one of Corporal Northcote being the first Royal Engineer to be awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal.

W.H. Fox Talbot mouse trap camera [replica]

It is a replica built in the style of the small "mousetrap" cameras designed by William Henry Fox Talbot in the mid 1830's . They were simple wooden boxes with a single lens used to expose paper negatives, sensitized by silver nitrate (the calotype or Talbotype process). Exposures often took hours, and Talbot had several of the cameras made by a local joiner near his country home in Laycock, Wiltshire. This replica was built by Wilhelm E. Nassau to demonstrate the loading and exposing of light sensitive paper in an early camera type. In the sliding holder the sensitive paper could be inserted into the camera and exposed for several minutes. The paper slide can be replaced by a matt screen. The lens is a simple achromatic design.
