Cabinet card album

Hard leather album with embossed design of a page turning on cover. Thick cardstock pages with openings for cabinet cards and cartes de visite. Sparsely populated, some tintypes. Mainly portraits from Quebec and United States.

[The Steam Man]

CDV size card with albumen image. Image is the invention of Zadoc P. Dederick. Inscription on verso "Geo. O. Bedford's Park Gallery, 166 Broad St., Newark, N.J. Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1868, by Zadoc P. Dederick, in the clerk's office of the District Court for the district of New Jersey." Dederick invented The Steam Man and patented him in March of 1868. The Steam Man was a steam powered pair of legs rigidly attached on a horizontal swivel to the front of a carriage. Hence the carriage was able to be steered. The body of the Man is the boiler and the driving cylinder is mounted on the back. Seems like this CDV was used along with the patent (#75874).

The apple thief

Magic lantern used to project this type of circular slide was of German design, and was available c.1850. Magic lantern slides were popular in the 1890s. This design was for domestic use, and the slide was illuminated by an oil lamp,and projected a circular image. The slides, often hand coloured, were often mounted six to a small disk. This one in particular has eight hand coloured images. It tells the story of the Apple Thief, the title is written on the slide in three languages, English, French (Le voleur de pommes) and German (Der Apfeldieb).

Like its been recently uncovered or excavated, with palm trees in background.

High Street

Glass slide. No frame. Black paper covering edges. White frame around image. Handwritten in ink on verso "High St. looking W. from Knox Ho." and in print "T.J. Walls, Optician, 12 Forrest Rd, Edinr." - T.J. Walls still exists today as an optician at 35 Forrest Rd, Edinr. Image is a street scene with clock tower, and another spire in distance. The title refers to the Knox house, one of Edinburgh's oldest houses and was supposedly once the home of Protestant Reformer John Knox. Dominating the skyline are the spires of the Tron Kirk and the High Kirk of St Giles where Knox preached his famous sermons.

Microphore viewer

Book-shaped contraption resembles a mono version of a stereoviewer. It has a green leather cover with the word "MICROPHORE" in gold letterpress on the spine. A two-part metal clasp releases a lid. When opened, a spring-loaded lens is aimed at an assembly of cotton loops that could attach to small photographs.

Chromatropes

Chromatrope devices consist of a wood frame, a metal winding mechanism, a tiny wood crank handle, and colour-patterned layers of glass that, when turned, resemble the optical effects of a kaleidoscope. Used for projection.

Blue and clear plastic case contains a self-timer, an adaptor, and instructions. The self-timer is metal, and has "MOD. ll" in red, and a red and ivory painted plate with the words "KOPIL, MADE IN JAPAN." The instructions are on blue vellum.

Handblown cylindrical clear glass bottle with cork, empty. Browned paper label with text reads: "ACETIC ACID, WARRANTED PURE, D.H. HOGG & CO., Wholesale Dealers in, Photographic Supplies, 128 Bay Street, TORONTO." Price sticker: "$125."

Orange cardboard tubes have grey labels printed with black ink: "M - Q DEVELOPER TUBES, Adapted to any make of Dry Plates, Films, Developing and Bromide Papers. PAPER, FILMS AND PLATES -- Dissolve thoroughly in Five ounces of water the contents of red end of tube. Then add and dissolve remainder."

Camera is made of wood: a two-part hinged frame supports a hinged lens assembly and hinged contact frame. The lens assembly includes a leather and felt lens cap. There is also a metal-ringed glass lens and a small metal key loose inside the camera body.

The Rock, White Rock, BC

Items consists of a post card of a 4 men and 4 women standing and sitting on a large rock. Image is circular and likely shot on an early Kodak Brownie. On the front, above the image someone has handwritten in pencil "The Rock", and below in pencil "White Rock B.C". The back of the photograph is printed with a post card format. This image was developed on Velox photographic paper, the first commercially successful photo paper.

Item is a black and white photograph of a man and a woman kissing. They are standing on a pile of rocks in a rural setting. The woman is wearing a long dark dress and a dark hat. She is holding a long wooden stick like a cane. The man is wearing a suit and is holding his hat in his hand. The photograph measures 7.25 x 10.75 cm and is mounted on a piece of embossed grey card. On the back of the card in pencil is written "Mother $10-" and blue pen "Nancy & Charles Crabb-".

Item consists of a black and white photograph of three women and thee girls sitting on the steps of a porch. The young woman on the left is wearing a dark dress and appears to be holding a camera. The woman in the middle is wearing white and holding a young girl in her lap. The woman on the right is wearing a dark dress and a wide brimmed hat with ornaments, and a sash. All three of the young girls are wearing white dresses. The house appears to be in a rural area.

Item consists of a black and white photograph of two boys standing, holding a string with fish on it between them. The boy on the left is wearing a shirt and black pants with a belt, and is holding one end of the string. The boy on the right is wearing a suit and a hat, and holding the other end of the string. On the string hangs 5-6 medium sized fish. Both boys are standing in front of a house and looking at the camera. There is an uneven white border around the image and below the image is handwritten "PALS". On the back of the photograph, stamped in blue is "New Crystal Finish, Reg U.S Patent, THE OWL DRUG CO., Lewison, Idaho", and on the bottom right "13". The Owl Dug Co. was created at 1128 Market Street in San Francisco in 1892. It branched out across the United States, until the Rexall Drug Co. bought out the chain in the 1930s.

Item consists of a black and white photograph of a boy and young girl sitting on a hammock. The boy is wearing shorts and boots and has his mouth open, laughing. The young girl is wearing a white dress and headband. They are sitting close to one another. Behind the hammock are trees and a ball in the grass, and in the background, there is a lake. The photograph has some motion blur. There is a 0.4 cm white border around the image.

Item consists of two black and white photographs of a woman lifting a baby out of a wicker baby carriage. The woman and carriage are on a walkway to the front of a house. There are some flowers in the background. The carriage is posed diagonally, baby and woman are looking at each other. The photos appear to be developed and fixed improperly, as there are liquid markings and fingerprints on the prints. The two images are identical but flipped and cropped differently. One is lighter than the other. On the back of each photograph is handwritten in black pen "Baby Rer. 6 wks."

Item consists of a black and white photograph of a woman standing next to a baby carriage. The woman is wearing a hat and fur coat. The baby is in a wicker pram. Both are looking at the camera. There are two houses behind them. There is a light leak toward the bottom right of the photograph. On the back of the photograph is handwritten in pencil "Apr 1915".

Item consists of two black and white photographs of a man and a dog. The man is wearing is suit and tie and hat, and is scratching a black and white dog behind its ears. They are in front of a house, and the dog is sitting on the steps. The man is looking at the camera. It appears as though the photograph was developed or fixed incorrectly, as there are marks from developing the image. The two photographs are identical, but different exposures. There is an uneven white border around both images. On the back of each photograph is written in pencil "28" and "50¢"

[Man Leads Two Women on Camels]

Item consists of a toned black and white photograph of a man leading two women on camels. The women appear to be tourists. They are both older women in hats, gloves and glasses. They appear to be tourists, sitting atop camels that have ornamental blankets on their backs. The man leading the camels is wearing a long white robe, has a beard and a turban. They appear to be in the desert. There is a 0.5 cm white border surrounding the image. On the back of the photograph is handwritten in pen "Miss Livingstone & H."

[Photographs from a Kodak No. 1 camera]

Item consists of twelve snapshots taken with the Kodak No. 1, the first rollfilm camera under the name "Kodak". Subjects include a house in a forest, a group of women posing in front of the house, a man walking by the house, cows, and men playing cricket or baseball. The images are round on a white background with a black border and gold gilded edges. On the back of one photograph is handwritten in pen "Set 2.00" on a piece of masking tape.

Brechin

Item consists of photographs of a trip to Brechin. The photos are taken in a rural farming area with subjects that include men and women, horses, hay, firewood, a log cabin, corn stalks, and cows.
