Negatives & Contact Prints: Student Assignments

This collection represents the blending of a large group of student photography assignments, comprised of black and white photographs and contact sheets from several accessions. The negatives and contact sheets are filed alphabetically, by the photographer's surname, except for a small group which is filed by subject. In addition, there is a small group of unidentified negatives and contact sheets.

Large display size prints of Journalism students

Five black and white photographs measuring 41cm x 51cm. Depicts Journalism students pasting up news copy and involved in various stages of publication production, and 3 black and white group photographs (16 x 23 cm ) attached to the sheets of paper.

Reference file photographs

Sub-series consists of 42 files containing black and white photographs used by Journalism students to illustrate articles in various Ryerson Publications or for reference purposes. A FINDING AID is available.

The Ryersonian newspaper

Bound and loose copies of the Ryersonian newspapers from 1948 until 2020. Access copies available for consultation in the Archives and Special Collections reading room.
As of Winter 2020 the Ryersonian newspaper went to an online format only because of the Covid 19 pandemic. It is yet to be determined if they will continue to put out a hardcopy newspaper.
In May of 2021 a renaming committee recommended that the names of both the Ryersonian and the Ryerson Review of Journalism should be changed. The School Council unanimously approved these motions. In July, the School reached out to community members with a renaming form, encouraging them to submit their ideas for new names. In September 2021 the name was changed on "On the Record".
These changes are in line with the University's announcement of its intention to change the name of the University in time for the 2022-2023 school year. This change was one of 22 recommendations put forward by the Standing Strong Taskforce whose mandate was to to develop principles to guide commemoration at the university and to respond to the history and legacy of Egerton Ryerson within the context of the university’s values.

Review of Journalism

Started in the Spring of 1984 as a yearly publication by the School of Journalism, it became a twice yearly publication in 1995 with Spring and Summer editions. In 2011 it switched to summer and winter editions. In 2013 the RRJ began publishing only one edition again. The editors of the journal are all Ryerson Students.

In May of 2021 a renaming committee recommended that the names of both the Ryersonian and the Ryerson Review of Journalism should be changed. The School Council unanimously approved these motions. Ryerson was removed from the name of the magazine. The Spring 2022 edition was the first with the new name "Review of Journalism".

Architectural rendering - Elsie K. Jones Building

Framed architectural rendering of the new nursing residence called the "Elsie K. Jones Building" Rendering was presented to Mrs. C. A. LaVenture (Elsie K. Jones) at the naming of the residence. Written under the rendering is:
"This drawing was presented on the Fourteenth day of April, 1971, to Mrs. C. A. LaVenture (Elsie K. Jones) on the occasion of the naming of the Nurses' Residence the "Elsie K. Jones Building".
Under her guidance as Director of Nursing at the Wellesley Hospital, the highest standards of nursing education and nursing service were established, and her devotion and willingness to serve remain a lasting inspiration to the nursing profession."

Framed certificate of appreciation granted to Elsie K. Jones upon her retirement from Wellesley's School of Nursing in 1964. It reads as follows:

The Hospital for Sick Children affiliate pediatric program

The Hospital for Sick Children program, in place since 1919, was offered to nurses from Toronto General Hospital, Toronto East General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital, Wellesley Hospital, St. Michael's Hospital, Branson Hospital, Women's College Hospital, and Soldiers' Memorial Hospital in Orillia. Graduate Nurses preparing for Ontario registration and students from the University of Toronto (come with their own instructor) were also in the program. Pediatric nursing was made a compulsory course for Nurses wishing to become registered with the Province of Ontario. The program itself lasted 8 weeks and covered conditions that were the most serious or most common in children including allergic conditions, cancer, congenital conditions, and exceptional children.
File contains a duotang with an outline of the pediatric nursing affiliate program.

Student notebook

Purple covered notebook belonging to a class of 1944 graduate. Inside the notebook are lecture notes and a copy of the Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing procedures manual relating to the second year of training. Lecture notes for classes - Dietetics, Orthopedic surgery and Surgical Nursing.

Elsie K. Jones notebook

File contains green hardback notebook kept by Elsie K. Jones. It is a assumed these notes were taken during her time as a student in the Nursing school and not while she was head of the School. Notes include everything from how to make a patients bed to bandaging to catherization.

School calendars

File contain program calendars from the 1950s to the 1970s. There are some dates written on the front of the booklets in pen, but no clear dates printed in the actual calendar. There are broken down into three file parts - 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s.

Medals

File contains Canadian (British) and American World War I and II medals. Some were awarded to Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing class of 1915 alumnus Willmina Ferguson and the others were donated by her family to the Archives.

Graduation exercises and cornerstone laying, 1965

File contains a 26 minute film that includes: the graduation exercises for the Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing held June 7th, 1951; a short section showing people using a stethoscope; and the rest of film is the cornerstone laying by the Honourable John Robarts for the new wing of the Wellesley Hospital on May 19, 1965.

Graduation, 1974

File contains materials relating to the Class of 1974 graduation from the Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing. This was considered the "last" Wellesley class graduation - although there was a 1975 graduation for the students that joined Wellesley in 1972. Included in the file are three copies of the ceremony program, one invitation to the Class of 1974 tea, one name plate, three copies of the ceremony invitation, two invitations to the graduation breakfast, one special guest instruction card, one copy of the graduation speech of Carol Whiting - Acting Principal of the Wellesley School of Nursing, three copies of G. E. Thornton's, Director of the Wellesley Hospital, speech, a news clipping fromt the Toronto Star about the graduation, and memos and correspondence in regards to convocation.

File contains materials relating to the Class of 1973 graduation from the Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing. This was the last graduation ceremony held before Wellesley became part of the Ryerson Polytechnical Institute School of Nursing. Included in the file is one copy of a speech given by Dorothy Arnot, one copy of the valedictory address, one copy of Dorothy Eden's speech, two ceremony invitations, one ceremony program mock-up, and various memos and correspondence regarding the graduation ceremony.

File contains materials relataing to the graduation of both the Class of 1972A on June 22, 1972 and the Class of 1972B on September 7, 1972.
For the Class of 1972A, the file contains two invitations to the graduation breakfast, two ceremony invitations, one invitation to the graduation tea, one ceremony invitation mock-up, and one copy of the ceremony program.
For the Class of 1972B, the file contains two copies of the ceremony program, one copy of the graduation breakfast invitation, and two copies of the ceremony invitation.
Also included in the file are various memos and correspondence about the ceremonies.

Jones, superintendent, was honoured with a the unveiling of her portrait (commissioned by the student nurses). Hospital founder Dr. Herbert Bruce did the unveiling. Included in the file is one copy of the superintendent's report given during the ceremony, 3 invitations to the graduation exercises, memos regarding the ceremony, and a financial report comparing costs for the graduation ceremonies for 1960, 1961 and 1962.

The Class of 1952 were the first to receive diplomas and pins from the Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing, Toronto General Hospital.

File contains photographs of the graduating class of 1975 of the Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing. Included are the class composite, and photographs of the ceremony. This is the last year the Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing graduated a class. The school amalgamated with Ryerson Polytechnical Institute's nursing program in 1973 (along with those of Sick Children's Hospital and Women's College Hospital). The graduation ceremony was held on June 2 and included the last classes from all three schools.
