Delta Sheraton Front Desk Computer Library : Hospitality and Tourism Dept.

The photographic image, created in the early to mid 1980s, shows three Hospitality and Tourism students using recently donated computer equipment as part of a front office hotel computer system from Delta Hotels, the Sheraton Corporation, and Electronic Engineering Company of California Inc. (EECO). The name of the training lab appears in the background.

First live Canadian television broadcast materials

Photograph, negative and press clippings of the first live television broadcast in Canada, as presented to an audience of over 300 members of the radio industry (including dealers) from the Toronto area. Entitled "This is the Fashion", the show was a collaborative effort between the schools of Electronics, Broadcasting and Fashion Design and was produced in the Ryerson boardroom and transmitted via coaxial cable to viewing screens in the Institute's auditorium. This special event was intended to promote not only television but the FM band (on which Ryerson's new radio station --CJRT-- was just starting to operate).

These pages are photocopies from Janet Page's (Miss Battersby's) Toronto Normal School scrapbook. The 1940 graduating class held a number of reunions, some of which are documented here and include a copy of a 1940 photograph taken on the front steps of the Toronto Normal School and a hand-drawn cartoon by another graduate illustrating Miss Battersby at her desk in the classroom.

See the 1940 yearbook for photographs of Miss Battersby, the artist of the cartoon, as well as other friends.

Lesson Topic form

Printed on bond paper, this Provincial Normal Schools standard form records the student teacher's practicum lesson to a class in a particular subject, thus the title, Lesson Topic. In this example, Miss Battersby successfully completed teaching the arithmetic lesson based on calculating the area of circles using a mathematical formula to a Grade 7 class. Because it is unclear where Miss Battersby undertook her practicum, the "Critic Teacher" who signed the form could have a Normal School faculty member or a teacher at a Model School class or a teacher in another school. The date and time of the practicum lesson are given. Also of note, the form itself, having been designed in November 1928 with 100,000 printed at that time.

Grad shot glasses

A collection of shot glasses given to graduates. Each glass has the year of graduation screened onto it.

In the Spring of 1954, the previous year's graduates, in concert with SAC (Students' Administrative Council), presented a "RYE '54" shot glass to each member of the class at their graduation dance. The "old" alumni filled each glass with an appropriate libation (Rye) and toasted the new alumni. While this first ceremony was conducted just for fun, the idea caught on. The filling of the glasses stopped when the number of graduates swelled in the 1960's, but the glasses continued to be handed out to graduates until 1993.

Library Conditions photographs

Photographs were taken on Monday November 10,1986 by a library staff member to record the condition the Library was found in on that Monday, after the Sunday's opening. After President Brian Segal and Vice President Tom Sosa inspected the Library, Segal issued a letter to the Ryerson Community expressing his disgust and concern. He further announced the closure of the library for following Sunday, November 16. SURPI (student union) reacted by organizing an overnight sit-in to take place Saturday, November 15 to Sunday, November 16 in protest of Segal's action. Segal later reversed his decision, but the sit-in went ahead as planned. For more details see : Library Doc. File, Forum November 14, 1986.
