Social album

Brown paper cover, bound with brown string, embossed with word "photographs" in gold. Cover flaking. Black pages.

Themes include family and social snapshots. Many photographs are loose. Also includes some loose postcards. Some loose photographs and postcards have notations or messages with dates on their verso. Also contains a loose newspaper clipping, feature article titled: "A Half Forgotten Legend of the Genesee: How an Indian maid and her French lover leaped to their death in River's Bosom".

Dates include: January 1949, December 1952.

England album

Item consists of brown, textured, hardcover, leather-bound album with decorative flower detailing on cover. Leather has worn off the spine. Pages are an off-white colour with decorative gold embossing and illustrative floral detail. Photographs slide in between two pieces of card that make each page and hold them in place.

Photographs are mostly portraits of one or two figures taken in studios across England, primarily around London, in towns and cities that include Brighton, Luton, Woburn, Tavistock, Bedford, Northampton and London. One photograph was made at J. C. Waler & Co. at 147 Yonge Street, Toronto.The address written inside the cover of the album is 61 High Street Ridgmont Bedford. Some notes and captions are written under and on the back of a few of the photographs in pencil and black ink. Inserted in the front page of the album are two loose pages with personal notes dated 1847 and 1881.

Item is a cabinet card portrait of baby. Brown text below photograph reads, 'Copyright Barraud 263 Oxford St London A few doors West of The Circus'. Brown text on back of card reads, 'Mr. Barraud 263, Oxford St. W (regent circus) London. Mr. Barraud bestows particular attention on enlargements, miniatures and reproductions which can be made from any photograph. All negatives registered and carefully preserved. Mr. Barraud's studios are approached by a lift constructed on the most approved patents which will be found a great advantage to sitters as no stairs have to be ascended, childrens portraits the same prices as other sitters.' Item consists of two photographs of a baby in a white dress sleeping in a bed. The baby is propped up on some pillows in a single bed. These appear to be the same photograph printed twice at different exposures.

[Little Girl in Baby Carriage]

Item consists of two black and white photographs of a little girl popping out of a baby carriage. In one photograph, the little girl is looking up, and in the other photograph she is looking out. The carriage is parked in the front or back of a house. There is ivy covering the house. There is a 0.5 cm white border surrounding the image. The back of both photographs are stamped in black ink "532C".

[Woman, Baby and Wicker Pram]

Item consists of a black and white photograph of a woman sitting beside a baby on some grass. Beside them is a wicker chair with a light coloured pillow and a wicker baby carriage. They appear to be sitting in the back yard of a home. There is an uneven white border surrounding the image. On the back of the photograph is handwritten "August 9th 1914".

Item is a pink cabinet card with red backing. In gold letterpress at bottom, "Peppiatt FERGUS." Image is of three children with toys. The youngest is seated in the centre holding a doll in her lap. On the left, a child in striped dress sits on a rocking horse, and to the right, a boy stands holding the reins to a wooden horse head lying on the floor. On verso, in pencil, "1.00".

Item consists of a beige card with photograph pasted on slightly smaller than the area designed for it. The photograph shows a group of 5 children, 2 girls and 3 boys. The girl at the left wears dark, high collared dress with bishop sleeves and ringlets in her short hair. The older girl in the centre wears a more dated sleeve style, fitted as in the 1880s, with a loose bodice and lace neckline and sleeve caps. The boys wear fitted sack coats buttoned at the top button only. The youngest in the picture wears what is probably a Fauntleroy suit, consisting of a velvet jacket, wide lace collar and ruffle down the front of his shirt. On verso, handwritten in ink, "Mrs Hyram Shelton".

Item consists of a white card with gold letterpress at bottom edge, "Swithun King/ Barrie and/ Orillia". In the centre, a design with artist's palette and brushes contains the text "EXTRA/ FINISH". Photograph is a group portrait of a man and woman with 5 children. The woman stands at the back, holding the youngest child in what appears to be a velvet trimmed dress. Two girls are seated on chairs and the boy sits on the floor in front. A girl in tartan dress stands at the knees of the father on the left. Behind the group, a backdrop with leaves and a mirror. On verso, handwritten in pencil, "L-10.00".

Item consists of a photograph mounted on light grey may with two dark grey borders. Image is of a group of boys seated out on a lawn in front of a building, with a row of adults standing behind them. They are in Scouts Canada uniforms and hold a banner at the front that reads "106th/ WOLF CUBS/ DO YOUR BEST".

Cream card with embossed text at bottom, "Gillespie" within a decorative artist's palette and brushes design, and "New Castle, Pa." The photograph is a full length portrait of a young boy standing on a chair piled with furs. He wears a dark jacket with high lace cuffs and wide, square collar toward the back (visible on the right shoulder) and an ascot tie. Instead of cropped trousers, he wears a skirt. A muffin-shaped hat is on his head.

On verso, elaborate design in gold ink repeating the photographer's name and studio address, along with a handwritten note and negative number. A cartoon of two Chinese (?) men appear in the lower left of the design. The card design was provided by Free Press Print, Ottawa.

The woman in the middle is wearing white and holding a young girl in her lap. The woman on the right is wearing a dark dress and a wide brimmed hat with ornaments, and a sash. All three of the young girls are wearing white dresses. The house appears to be in a rural area.

Item consists of a black and white photograph of a boy and young girl sitting on a hammock. The boy is wearing shorts and boots and has his mouth open, laughing. The young girl is wearing a white dress and headband. They are sitting close to one another. Behind the hammock are trees and a ball in the grass, and in the background, there is a lake. The photograph has some motion blur. There is a 0.4 cm white border around the image.

Item consists of two black and white photographs of a woman lifting a baby out of a wicker baby carriage. The woman and carriage are on a walkway to the front of a house. There are some flowers in the background. The carriage is posed diagonally, baby and woman are looking at each other. The photos appear to be developed and fixed improperly, as there are liquid markings and fingerprints on the prints. The two images are identical but flipped and cropped differently. One is lighter than the other. On the back of each photograph is handwritten in black pen "Baby Rer. 6 wks."
