Julie Mollins graduated from Ryerson University in 2004 with a Bachelor of Journalism. While at Ryerson, Mollins wrote for and acted as the photo editor of the Ryersonian newspaper. Before turning to Journalism in 2000, Mollins worked at the Justina M. Barnicke Art Gallery at the University of Toronto and as a prop builder and jeweller in the theatre industry. Mollins has completed freelance work for the University of Toronto Varsity newspaper, MacLean's Magazine, Canadian Business, MoneySense, and the Edmonton Journal. She spent eight years working for Reuters and for the former Thomson Reuters Foundation websites AlertNet and TrustLaw. From 2013 to 2014, Mollins was the social media and blog editor for the Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR). Since August 2014, Mollins has worked as the wheat communications officer for the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre in El Batan, Mexico. In addition to her degree from Ryerson, Mollins holds a BA in Cinema Studies from the University of Toronto, and attended the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, the Corcoran College of Art, and Dalhousie University.
