Biographical history
William James Topley was a photographer with a studio located in Ottawa, Ontario between 1883-1893. He is best known for photographing large-scale composites. He was born in Aylmer, Quebec and moved to Montreal in 1863 to work for William Notman.

Item is a white card with vignetted portrait of a young woman. On verso, an elaborate printed design featuring celtic-style scrollwork, cherubs with paint and canvas or a cornucopia. The photographer's name is given as "TOPLEY" with an address at "104 SPARKS ST/ OTTAWA". In the centre, text identifies the photographer as "PHOTOGRAPHER BY APPOINTMENT TO/ HIS EXCELLENCY/ THE MARQUIS OF LOFANE(Sic)/ AND/ HER ROYAL HIGHNESS/ THE PRINCES LOUISE."

Poor. The card is torn in various places, there is a red stain at the top of the image and on the back at the lower left. The image is yellowed.
