England album

Item consists of brown, textured, hardcover, leather-bound album with decorative flower detailing on cover. Leather has worn off the spine. Pages are an off-white colour with decorative gold embossing and illustrative floral detail. Photographs slide in between two pieces of card that make each page and hold them in place.

Photographs are mostly portraits of one or two figures taken in studios across England, primarily around London, in towns and cities that include Brighton, Luton, Woburn, Tavistock, Bedford, Northampton and London. One photograph was made at J. C. Waler & Co. at 147 Yonge Street, Toronto.The address written inside the cover of the album is 61 High Street Ridgmont Bedford. Some notes and captions are written under and on the back of a few of the photographs in pencil and black ink. Inserted in the front page of the album are two loose pages with personal notes dated 1847 and 1881.

Brown leather cover embossed with black and gold designs. Spine also embossed with stripes and lettering- "Album." Simple metal clasp. Front leaf and title page included. White pages with window opening and gold border. Brown fabric binding.

Item consists of a photograph of a group of young men in white t-shirts and shorts, with one man wearing a dark sweater in the centre. They all have their arms folded across their chests. At the bottom, a wooden sign is laid out with the words "W.M.C.A. PHYSICAL CULTURE CLASS". Photograph is mounted on brown card with the text embossed at the lower right, "Johnston/ WICK AND THURSO".

The image is a full-length portrait, wiht three women in white blouses and dark, plain wrap-style skirts (the one at the far right has buttons decorating the seam) and the youngest in a sailor style dress. Item is a carte de visite photograph of women dressed as witches stirring a cauldron from Shakespeare's MacBeth. Photographer's stamp on verso reads: "Wm. REEVIE / PHOTOGRAPHER, / BALLATER."

Item consists of a brown coloured cabinet with a cream coloured verso. Adhered to the recto is an image of a man, woman, and two young girls sitting in a cardboard prop of a late nineteenth-century automobile. An older woman leans against the hood of the vehicle. All are wearing hats. The backdrop to this studio setting features a landscape. Recto reads: "W. Lees / PHOTOGRAPHER (left) / 23 BATH ST. / PORTOBELLO. (right)" and the verso has "7.00" inscribed with graphite.

Item is a publicity photograph of two men in tuxedos and top hats holding canes. Identified to be Cressie Leonard (1887-unknown) and Billy Leonard (1891-1974), both Irish-born English variety theatre entertainers, musical comedy actors and singers. Here they are photographed for the 1916 and 1917 touring revue, "A la Carte".

Man on left is seated, wearing a suit and bow tie. Man on right wears a sailor style suit, and appears again in 2005.001.102. Embossed on bottom edge of card, in silver, "The Royal Photo Co./ 12 Shacklewell Lane/ Kingsland, N.E." On verso, at top left in pencil, "3-". Kingsland N.E. was the name of a village that has now been adopted by the Dalston Junction in the Borough of Hackney, London, U.K.
