Minstrel show group portrait

Item is a group portrait of a minstrel show. 42 performers, including children and adults, are posed seated or standing on a stage. Six of the performers appear in blackface, wearing makeup and wigs.

Minstrel shows are a style of variety show, most popular during the late 19th and early 20th century, in which white performers use make-up and costumes to depict racist and stereotypical caricatures of Black people. The genre originated in the United States, but Canada had its own troupes and touring companies, and the format was popular with schools, community groups, and religious organizations.

A two-page hand-written eulogy was found with the photograph that begins "Ella Roberts age 85 years of Galena, Ohio died November 28, 1949..."

Item is a brown bi-fold card with an embossed design with shield and helmet on the front left flap, beneath which is the photographer's name in letterpress: "A.E. Lyon/ Photo./ Charlottetown, P.E.I." Inside, a photograph is adhered to the card showing three women in a studio, one holding a baby. All 4 are identified by a handwritten note on the inside of the right flap.

The girls wear dresses with big white lace collars, very fashionable in children's fashion from the 1870s. All four corners are angled off.

Item is an unmounted group portrait of four men and one woman sitting in a car. It is believed to be a Ford Model A car dating from 1903 which is how the photograph is dated. All four men are wearing bowlers hats, and suits with jackets and ties. Woman is wearing a large hat with flowers. Man behind wheel and another in backseat both have mustaches. Studio backdrop. Black band across top of image.

Man standing behind seated man on armrest, has his hand on his shoulder. Two of the faces are blurry from movement during exposure. One man on left and centre man (both seated) have handkerchief in breast pocket. All are wearing suits, with jakets and vest, bowties, hats and chain watches. Top left corner is angled off.

Item is an unmounted studio portrait of one young boy and one older boy. The older one sits in a chair, while the younger perches on the armrest, on his right. The younger boy is wearing a jacket that is buttoned up. The older boy has a jacket, only top button done up, with vest and tie. Both arms are on armrest, with legs crossed. The younger boy's face is slightly blurred, from moving it during exposure. It looks to be same studio, props and seating arrangement as 2008.001.1811.

They are wearing fitted dresses with skirts looping in front, narrow sleeves and high collars, most wear a brooch at the throat. Style is suggestive of 1880s fashion. Hair is up, with curled bangs. All four corners of tintype are angled off.

The girl on the left has the initials, "E.A.C", the man, "S.J.C." and the woman on the right, "M.E.C."

All men wear vests, hats and sport mustaches. Man on right, on grass, is holding a pipe. Man on right, sitting on backwards chair, has a chain watch. Top and bottom left corners are cut at an angle.

Image shows two rows of boys (and one older man in the first row) seated outdoors in front of a brick wall on the ground. On verso, handwritten in ink, "In this house of which the whole/ family is Christian we hold a regular/ weekly children's meeting. The only/ Christian service in that village./ The older girl kneeling near me is one/ of our family here. She teaches the/ children in that home - Matsuda/ Mitsuko by name."

Item consists of a cream coloured card with photograph affixed of 6 men in a park setting. The backdrop is painted with trees, and there are columns on either side of the group. Three men sit in the back row, two in front, and a third lays on the ground in front. A pile of bowler hats is a the bottom left. On verso, handwritten in pencil, "25-".

Item consists of a beige card with photograph pasted on slightly smaller than the area designed for it. The photograph shows a group of 5 children, 2 girls and 3 boys. The girl at the left wears dark, high collared dress with bishop sleeves and ringlets in her short hair. The older girl in the centre wears a more dated sleeve style, fitted as in the 1880s, with a loose bodice and lace neckline and sleeve caps. The boys wear fitted sack coats buttoned at the top button only. The youngest in the picture wears what is probably a Fauntleroy suit, consisting of a velvet jacket, wide lace collar and ruffle down the front of his shirt. On verso, handwritten in ink, "Mrs Hyram Shelton".

Two girls are seated on chairs and the boy sits on the floor in front. A girl in tartan dress stands at the knees of the father on the left. Behind the group, a backdrop with leaves and a mirror. Item consists of a beige card with black letterpress at bottom right, "W.S. Durrer,/ Formosa." Photograph shows a man in sack coat and waistcoat with tie, holding a boy in a sailor style suit at his side. In the centre, a young girl in a dress with two layers of ruffles at the neck is seated, while a boy in fitted suit jacket and ascot stands behind her. The wife and youngest girl are seated a the right. The woman wears a dress with a fitted sleeve with ball shaped puff which dates the style to 1897. The girl wears a dress in sailor style with a square lapel.

[3 Women and a Man on a Lock]

Item consists of three black and white photographs of three women and a man on a lock. In each of the photographs, the women and man stand and sit in different configurations. They are perched against the lock's crank, and behind them is the lock and water. In the background there are some trees. The women are dressed is dresses and skirts, and the man is wearing a suit and tie. They look relaxed and are all wearing hats. Two of the photographs show only part of the faces of the people. It seems as though the photographer shot them too low, so parts of them are cut out of the frame. Each photograph is surrounded by an uneven white border. On the back of each photograph is handwritten in pencil the number "8", and on one of the photographs in brown pen is "July 12 / 19"

File contains promotional group portraits of children participating in outdoor activities, including sleighing, camping, tree climbing and Easter egg hunting. Many are enclosed with captions that feature photography technique pointers, such as a print of a row of toddlers sitting outside on a bench with a caption that reads: "The photographer saw this fascinating line-up and was quick to get their picture before the children noticed."
