Algemene aantekening
In late 1959 the Toronto Nutrition Committee (TNC) was formed as a vehicle for communicating with one voice accurate healthy eating messages to Toronto citizens and beyond. This was part of a larger Canada wide initiative started by Dr. E. McHenry at University of Toronto to get the Canadian government to focus on the nutritional health of Canadians as a result of survey work he had completed on low income families in Toronto. TNC remained a vital communications force in the Toronto foods and nutrition community through to the mid 80s. A significant work was the writing and distribution throughout Canada of the booklet, "Food Habits of New Canadians", to help Canadian professionals understand the food habits of the large immigrant population coming to Canada. It’s last project was the creation of the Elizabeth Chant Robertson Award in honour of a tireless pediatrician at Sick Children’s Hospital who worked on the development of Pablum and was an enthusiastic promoter of instilling in young children healthy eating habits. The ECR Award recognized the achievements of foods and nutrition professionals in effectively communicating healthy eating messages. Since 2007, each year in Toronto about 80 food and nutrition professionals have been meeting informally for lunch to renew professional relationships and friendships. Some of those in this group were members of the predecessor organization, the Toronto Nutrition Committee, which was active in Toronto from the 1950s to the 1990s. Aside from promoting healthy eating habits, the Committee supported and communicated research and applied knowledge about the challenges of ensuring adequate, nourishing food for all, especially women and children. Its primary purpose was to enable nutrition professionals to network—long before the term became popular.
The Toronto Nutrition Connection is a current networking group of foods and nutrition professionals, some of whom were previously very involved in The Toronto Nutrition Committee.
