This fonds contains documents created by the Department of English. The majority of the records are administrative and academic in nature, focusing on internal correspondence, course syllabi and reading lists, budgetary information regarding the department, and faculty records. There are also a number of promotional posters and graphics created by the department to advertise their guest lectures, workshops, and the program in general. In addition, there are also several published books, primarily covering poetry and short story anthologies published by faculty members and students.

Department of English

Administrative and Internal Records

This series contains files relating to the inner workings and administration of the Department of English. The series is divided into two sub-series, the first and larger sub-series covers documents and reports regarding the management and internal communications of the department, and the second sub-series contains information pertaining to the faculty who staffed the English department.

Administrative Documents

This sub-series contains documents covering the administration and management of the Department of English. This includes records relating to meeting minutes and department decisions, budgetary documents, proposals, job postings, and other notable events in the department's history. The majority of the documents cover the internal correspondence and memorandums sent throughout the department.

The "Fired Five" incident

This file contains memorandums, clipping and documentation regarding "Fire Five" incidents (when five English teachers were fired).

A Proposal to Establish a Language Centre, Preliminary Report

The title proper of the report in this file is, Preliminary Report of the English Department Language Committee, A Proposal to Establish a Language Centre.

The Language Committee assessed and proposed a language and writing centre, centralized to better serve students' access to language and writing skill courses, as well as English as a Second Language (ESL) at the academia level.

The committee submitted the preliminary report to the Dean of Arts, Dr. Errol Aspevig.

Faculty Records

This sub-series contains files regarding the Department of English's faculty members. Documents include photographs and photo-negatives of professors, curriculum vitaes, faculty lists, and correspondence pertaining to sabbaticals and resignations.

Faculty Lists and personnel records

This file contains Personnel Records of Faculty members. In addition to personnel records, this file also contains correspondence regarding resignations and sabbaticals. Curriculum Vitaes for Department of English faculty members are also contained in this file.

Academic Documents

This series contains course outlines, syllabi, and course examination material for various Department of English classes from the years of 1946 to 2010. Information regarding what courses would teach, what texts they would require students to read, and various administrative information, such as how long a class would run for, are contained in this series of documents.

Posters and Promotional Material

This series contains files regarding posters and other promotional material produced by the Department of English. Topics include lecture series, information nights about the department and the English program, and various workshops.

Notices

This file contains notices of events that are being produced by, or concern the Department of English. Writing workshops, department elections, and poetry event notifications are in this file.

Lunch Table Talks

Lunch Table Talks are an occasional lecture series featuring the latest research from members of Ryerson's English Department.

Published Material

This series of files contains published works and materials produced by the faculty and students of Ryerson University from 1970 onward. The bulk of the series are poetry collections and some short stories.

Ryerson English Workbook

This file contains 2 copies of the Ryerson English Workbook, 1 that has been stapled together and 1 which is not bound. Published in 1975, these workbooks were written by Alison Acker, Ronald Conrad, Marie Dowler, Peter McLaughlin, and Margaret Morriss. These textbooks contain writing and grammar exercises for students.

The Chinese Shop in Children's Literature

File contains 2 copies of a brochure advertising the collection and its exhibitions prepared by Ryerson University's Children's Literature Archive. The Children's Literature archive consists of books and toys.
