Heavily painted. Image is of an older man with white hair sitting at a table, with a dog standing on its hind legs, its front paws on the man's lap. In the BRC there's the numbers 99-218 printed on slide itself. More research shows that Joseph Hawkes worked in New York City and Brooklyn in the late 19th century, and he hand coloured slides. "He worked with the Brooklyn Museum's curator of fine arts, William Henry Goodyear, to reproduce images of archaeological and architectural sites in Europe as well as images of the Paris Exposition." There's mountains around him, trees towering over him. The sky is blue with some clouds. Date based on research that shows Edward Van Altena's studio was active during 1890s-1910s. This series part of Life Model Slides. "The most popular slides in Victorian times were 'life model slides', which depicted popular sentimental stories of the day.The slides were produced by arranging actors in costume in front of a painted back drop. Stage props were placed in front of the actors and the scenes from the story were photographed. The slides were often hand tinted with colour and sold in boxes, along with a text to be used as a reading.In particular the temperance movement and political speakers used slides to convert a mass audience." Lantern slides series

Series consists of sets of lantern slides, often of historical monuments or landscapes. One set of painted slides appears to recount a story, with images of people outdoors on a farm, in a carriage, dancing and fighting. Another set of non-photographic painted slides depicts children working and playing. The slides in this series were mass produced for the commercial market.

[Miss Kenney group portraits]

Consists of two group portraits of women in Victorian aprons, white dresses and bows in their hair. One portrait is set indoors and one is an exterior shot. Both prints have the Topley Ottawa stamp at the bottom left corner.

Photograph of a group of 7 passengers in an early automobile, stopped along Stanley Park drive in front of the "Hollow Tree". This old cedar was a popular spot for group photographs in both cars and horse-drawn carriages. The stamp on the back of the card mount indicates this was taken by an official park photographer: "The Stanley Park Photographers, Head Office, 162 Cordova Street, Vancouver, B.C.". The negative number for ordering more prints is given as 4869a.

File consists of four card mounted photographs, 3 of the same man in various poses and 1 of a woman. All mounted on black card by studios in Montreal. The photographs were found inside the Agnes Osberg album (2009.005.023) with a yellow sticky note that read: Came from the same family But Not this album.

5 photographs of the same woman in light-coloured blouse, different poses and backgrounds. Each image is stamped "PROOF ONLY" on the front, and again on the back with more explanatpry text. The studio's name is given as "The Stride Studios". The sitter was identified as "Miss Helen Ballock." on a manilla envelope which contained the images. [Envelope removed]

Item is a white card with vignetted portrait of a young woman. On verso, an elaborate printed design featuring celtic-style scrollwork, cherubs with paint and canvas or a cornucopia. The photographer's name is given as "TOPLEY" with an address at "104 SPARKS ST/ OTTAWA". In the centre, text identifies the photographer as "PHOTOGRAPHER BY APPOINTMENT TO/ HIS EXCELLENCY/ THE MARQUIS OF LOFANE(Sic)/ AND/ HER ROYAL HIGHNESS/ THE PRINCES LOUISE."

Cream card with blue and pink colour patches highlighting the words "Merry Christmas" and the date "1956". The family's address is printed sideways up the front of the card, and the parent's names are given at the bottom. Inside, the phrase "and the children....." is added to the inside left, while a black and white photograph of 6 children is pasted onto the right.

Item is a grey and green mottled-pattern bi-fold card with, art nouveu floral design embossed into the upper left corner of the front flap. On the front of the right flap is embossed the name of the photographer: "Craswell/ Charlottetown, P.E.I." Inside, a photograph of a woman with a short haircut. The image is very dark, causing the rest of her body to be obscured. On the inside of the left flap, a handwritten note gives her name and the date.

Item is a cream coloured card with photograph of a man wearing a suit with hand-coloured purple tie. On verso, design in gold ink for the Notman Studio: "W. NOTMAN" with the Royal Crest at the centre and a ribbon wrapping that which reads "PHOTOGRAPHER TO/ HER MAJESTY" followed by the locations of studios in "MONTREAL/ OTTAWA/ TORONTO/ & HALIFAX". At four corners of the design are images of medals, which read clockwise from top left, "LONDON" "1862/ LONDINE/ HONORIS/ CAUSA/ 1862" "1867" and "NAPOLEON III EMPEROR/ PARIS".

Cream coloured card with grey border and oval photograph, showing a woman wearing an off-the-shoulder dress and heart necklace. The studio stamp at the bottom right is illustrated with a stylized version of the Prince of Wales coat of arms. The text reads: "The Carbon Studio./ Fraser Bryce,/ MANAGER/ PHOTOGRAPHER BY APPOINTMENT/ TO THEIR ROYAL HIGHNESSES/ THE PRINCE AND PRINCESS OF WALES". Handwritten note on verso indicates the woman's name was Margaret and she delivered this card photograph to the Macgowan family for Christmas.

Item is a cream coloured bi-fold card (3 flaps) with an embossed ribbon on the front flap at lower right. Inside, a vignetted photograph of a man in Canadian army uniform, with a badge on his right shoulder labeled "Toronto". The back of the photograph is stamped "HALKSWORTH WHEELER/ 109A SANDGATE ROAD./ FOLKESTONE". This is handwritten on the front of the photograph, and the date August 1917 is written on the card.

Minstrel show group portrait

Item is a group portrait of a minstrel show. 42 performers, including children and adults, are posed seated or standing on a stage. Six of the performers appear in blackface, wearing makeup and wigs.

Minstrel shows are a style of variety show, most popular during the late 19th and early 20th century, in which white performers use make-up and costumes to depict racist and stereotypical caricatures of Black people. The genre originated in the United States, but Canada had its own troupes and touring companies, and the format was popular with schools, community groups, and religious organizations.

A two-page hand-written eulogy was found with the photograph that begins "Ella Roberts age 85 years of Galena, Ohio died November 28, 1949..."

The card-mounted photographs are all studio portraits of unidentified individuals. The first of two cabinet cards is embossed with "Quartley", and the second is embossed with "Morton." Two Cartes de visites are printed on verso with "J.F. Rowe. A fifth card is identified as a "Gem" photo card, printed on verso with "R.W. Knorr" and an advertisement for the tiny Gem format.

Photograph is of a woman sitting in front of a fireplace, with Redbook magazine open on her lap. The support for the image is a neon-red paper. Lillian Russell, born Nellie Leonard in Clinton, Iowa in 1861, was a famous comic opera actress in New York city. She made her stage debut in "Time Tries All" in Chicago in 1877 before moving to New York in 1879 and continuing her career in musicals, burlesque and dramatic shows. Near the end of her life, she was appointed as a special investigator to study immigration conditions by President Harding. She presented a report to the United States Department of Labor that suggested an "immigration holiday" of 5 years, the sifting of immigrants on the other side, and 21 years residence in the US before naturalization. Annie Deacon

American actress, burlesque performer. She is recorded as having performed in "Our Cinderella: A Burlesque" by William Gill in the Colville Company's 1878-9 season, and in "The Magic Slipper" for Haverley's Theater in New York in August 1879, produced by Samuel Colville's Opera Burlesque Company.
