Governance and Gridlock - solving the problem for 21st century city regions

File contains 2 copies of Governance Gridlock, the publication that came out of the December 11 and 12, 2012 symposium held at Ryerson. Publication is edited by Ryerson distinguished visiting scholar and special advisor Anne Golden, and Sophie Knowles, and Urban and Regional Planning graduate student.

Ryerson Rambler magazine

This Ryerson publication was mailed to the Ryerson community and alumni. The collection is not complete ; there are no issues for 1972 and a few issues appear to be missing from the 1960s.

In 1997 the name was changed to Ryerson Magazine, with the first issue appearing in the Spring of that year. A further name change occurred in 2022 to Toronto Met University Magazine (see Related materials below for a link.)

Jack McAllister correspondence

Correspondence written by Jack McAlister. Letters regarding his applications for funding from the Federal Government to finance trips to various theatrical institutions around the world through the Canadian Council Arts awards. His research led to the establishment of Ryerson's Theatre School - incorporating the best techniques of the schools he visited. File also includes letters written by him to his colleagues at Ryerson during his travels.

Examination papers

Exam papers from the Theatre School and the Canadian College of Dance. Also included is a supplemental exam from 1971 and exams created by Jack McAlister for his History of Drama class - which pre-dates the Theatre School.

Acting program auditions

File contains audition schedules, names of students to be auditioned, correspondence and related documents.

Performing Arts Series Agents

Advertising and correspondence regarding various artistic groups who toured North American theatres. Some of these groups and individuals were engaged by the Ryerson Theatre Department.

Bring Canadians Home Theatre Company proposal

A non-profit organization which sought to produce four productions in 1976 using leading Canadian actors and directors.They were interested in using Ryerson Theatre for these performances and as a "home base". The Company would use Ryerson students, wherever possible in their productions and would give special classes as well. File contains budget proposal and position paper. It would appear that Ryerson Theatre was never used for this purpose.

LOFT Community Services annual Christmas concerts

The School of Performance is partnered with LOFT and faculty, staff and students from the program participated in the production of the annual christmas concert. LOFT (Leap of Faith Toronto) is a community service provider in Ontario that supports people facing a combination of mental and physical health challenges, addiction issues, poverty, and/or homelessness.

Theatre production: scanned prints

A series of print-outs from scanned original photographs maintained by the Theatre School. These photos are from the numerous drama and dance productions performed by Theatre School students. They are arranged chronologically by year.

Teaching and High School Entrance Certificates - Mary Reeves

Five certificates received by May Ferguson under her maiden name, Reeves. One of the certificates is an admission certificate to a "Collegiate Institute, High School or Continuation School" whereas the remaining certificates are kindergarten/public schoolteacher's certificates. Two of these certificates are for programs taken at the Toronto Normal School.

1937-1938 Toronto Normal School yearbook and book, "Dorothy"

  • 1 yearbook for the Toronto Normal School 1937-1938 was originally owned by Dorothy Sheahan (later Redican).
  • 1 book of stories centred around Dorothy Redican's (nee Sheahan) life and those of her family ; written by her son in the voice of Dorothy, a storyteller. The book compliments the yearbook.

sepia-toned photograph of a graduating class of the Toronto Normal School. There are 21 individuals in the photograph including two individuals who appear to be senior officials and Donalda Jean Cruickshank, the donor's grandmother, who is seated front row centre.

1940 Toronto Normal School Graduate Reunions

These pages are photocopies from Janet Page's (Miss Battersby's) Toronto Normal School scrapbook. The 1940 graduating class held a number of reunions, some of which are documented here and include a copy of a 1940 photograph taken on the front steps of the Toronto Normal School and a hand-drawn cartoon by another graduate illustrating Miss Battersby at her desk in the classroom.

Prints and Negatives: Normal School Caretaker Lachlan McCorkindale

black and white copy negatives and corresponding copy prints of three photographs showing Lachlan McCorkindale, caretaker of the Education Department/Toronto Normal School at St. James Square. Mr. McCorkindale was born in Scotland on October 25, 1845 and died on March 17, 1913. 1.1A portrait of Mr. McCorkindale: his wife, Sarah Jane (nee Doak, b. March 25, 1861, d. March 26, 1913); their young daughter, (Edna) Gertrude McCorkindale (b. April 4, 1893, d. 1990); and "Willie", a cousin. 1.2 Shows Mr. McCorkindale with a group of individuals, on the grounds of the Normal School, next to one of its buildings.1.3 Shows Mr. McCorkindale, with four unidentified women, in front of what is thought to have been his residence at the Normal School. This building became the Ryerson "Dreamhouse" in the 1950s -- a model home which served as both residence and classroom for Home Economics students.

Two antique prints. Both show the Toronto Normal School/Provincial Education Department at St. James Square in 1881-1882 and were published in the following books : The Last Forty Years : Canada Since the Union of 1841 and Picturesque Canada : The Country As It Was and Is. This file also contains reproductions of the covers of the aforementioned books.
