Devil's Bridge

Lantern slide, glass B&W slide in wood frame. Image framed in black and gold. Sticker on glass handwritten in pencil "Devils Bridge" and perhaps the word "Switzerland." In print "E. & H. T. Anthony & Co. New York." Image of two bridges spanning a river, in a canyon. Research showed that it is the Devil's bridge of St. Gotthard's Pass in Switzerland. It is recorded that the first bridge was destroyed by a flood in 1888, and the second bridge was built in 1826 and third one in 1958. This image shows two bridges, the original and the second which is why the slide is date ca. 1826-1888.

Dick Whittington

Magic lantern used to project this type of circular slide was of German design, and was available c.1850. Magic lantern slides were popular in the 1890s. This design was for domestic use, and the slide was illuminated by an oil lamp,and projected a circular image. The slides, often hand coloured, were often mounted six to a small disk. This one in particular has eight hand coloured images. It tells the story of Dick Whittington, and English folktale, the title is written on the slide in three languages, English, French and German (Gesetzlich Geschutzt). It is the story of a young man who makes his fortune in London, with his cat.

Dinner in a cathedral

Item consists of a photograph mounted on white card with black letterpress at bottom edge, reading from left to right "J. Russell & Sons/ Photographers", "By special appointment to/ His Majesty the King.", "17, Baker Street. W. &/ 13, High St. Windsor." Photograph shows a long gothic style hall (probably the nave of a cathedral) laid out with tables for dining, and men seated at all the tables. Handwritten in pencil on the verso, "25.00" and "797113".

Research into Dresden museums showed that it resembled the facade of the Old Masters Picture Gallery, state art museum located in the Semper wing of the Zwinger Palace.

Dynaweld

Ecuador album

Item consists of an album with a black cover held by a string. The album begins with pages of people in Halloween costumes followed by travel photographs with images of a family on a boat and by a farm. Includes photographs of people and landscapes in Educador. It seems like the family travelled using the Guayaquil-Quito Railroad.

Egypt album

Reptile pattern, black cover embossed design. Bound by braided string. Grey pages - photographs glued in. Album made in Great Britain by Ensign Albums. No notations or dates.

Themes include dogs, forest, camping, mountains, snow, biking, early motorbikes, railroads, families, log cabins, rivers, military, and mining at the beginning. From the fourth page to the ninth page the photographs feature images of palm trees, desert, the pyramids, other Egyptian landmarks, the construction of a railway, farming, camping, wagons pulled by camels, a river and waterfalls. The final pages completed of the album show family snapshots, a farm in the country (possibly England), croquet, a harbour, dogs and ships.

Egypt album

Brown cardboard album is bound with string. Affixed to the front cover is a watercolour of a man and a camel at the base of the Pyramids. Inserted into the 12 paper pages are photographs of wartime Egypt. There are two loose prints: one of a guard tower, and the other of a shield that reads "Patience!! NOUS te PLUMERONS." Also included are 2 postcards: one is of the H.M.H.S. Asturias, and is addressed to Mrs. Wm. Lawler, of Vancouver, B.C.; the other is a group portrait of soldiers, and is addressed to Mrs. E. Shaw, also of Vancouver.

Item is a portrait of woman reclining in a black leotard. Embossed on lower right hand side of photograph reads, 'Arnold, Brooklyn, N.Y.' Inscription in blue ink on back of photograph reads, 'Elsie K. Orr My first Wife, (illegible letter).V.O.'

Emperor William I

Note that the date is a guess determined by the reigne of Emperor William I. Lantern slide, wood frame with glass B&W slide - oval shape image. Looks to be a half tone from an engraving. Inscription in gold letters on the purple frame around the image "From J.G. Langguth, Manufacturer of Magic Lanterns and slides, Chicago, Ills." and a sticker in ink "Emperor William Germany." Sticker with the letter Y on wood frame.

Empty photograph envelopes

Various photograph envelopes from Kodak in Montreal QC, Gurds Sports Hobbies in London ON, and Tamblyn Tel-Vision Prints in Toronto. Advertisements for Verichrome Safety film on Kodak envelopes. One envelope contains two prints of A.T. Orr, one with him and a group of friends, the other holding game after hunting.

England album

Leather cover embossed with flowers, metal clasp; one prong on clasp [front cover side] slightly loose. Some flower borders within. Gilt edge to pages. No handwritten notations.

Photo studios include J.Brown, Newport Salop; W. W. Winter Art Photography, Derby.

Themes include portraits, early bicycles, boats and carriages.

England album

Textured, decorative print album bound by red braid string. Black pages with photos glued in and with photo corners. White labels with handwritten notations in blue ink. Includes newspaper clippings and handpainted photogrpahs.
Photographs are family snapshots taken in the 1930s, mostly all labeled, taken around different locations in England and Canada. It briefly describes a family's move from England to Toronto.

England album

Green cover bound by knotted green string. The word "Photographs" on the cover in gold lettering. Black pages - photographs held in with black photo corners. Some loose photographs. Many pages blank, missing photograph.

Photographs are mostly of people and various family snapshots in Great Britain and France. Some activities included are biking, picnicking, camping, canoeing, and many amateur shots from around the home. There are also photographs taken of the military, and of school composites.

Dates incude: May 27th, 1945 (back of a loose photograph).

English church

Cyanotype image of a church on a country road, with a child standing in driveway. Gate to church is closed. Inscription handwritten in black ink on recto "English Church." Paper is very thin. Dated 1904 because same handwriting as 2008.001.1881.

Album covered in blue fabric. Light brown pages with photographs glued smoothly on. Handwritten labels in black ink directly onto album pages.

Item is a photograph album with a blue cloth cover and leather spine. Binding is intact. White pages. Includes 88 photographs, including albumen, platinum and photomechanical reproductions. Photographs mounted with glue. Notation in brown/black ink. Photographs on one side of page only. Handwritten notations in black ink; some scribbling and childish drawings in pencil.

Themes include architectural images of well-known sites and one or two famous paintings, including the Descent of the Cross painting by Ruben.

Family album

Reddish-brown leather cover with gold embossing that reads Photographs. Notations in black ink. Black construction paper-like pages. Many of the last pages are left blank. Some photographs are missing or have been removed. Many images significantly faded. Cover and pages are warped - almost as if they were wet and dried.

Notation on inside end page reads "Miss M. E. Thompson / August [?]th 1901 / Baby's Photos".

Photographs depict primarily family and mothers with children. Some also show plays being put on in a yard by the family, farms, and archery. They are all family snapshots taken mostly around the home.
Themes include: archery, dogs, cows, drama, family and children's portraits.

Family children's meeting

Item consists of a photograph of a Japanese family and white guest. All are seated on ats inside or on the patio to a home. On verso, handwritten in ink, "In this house of which the whole/ family is Christian we hold a regular/ weekly children's meeting. The only/ Christian service in that village./ The older girl kneeling near me is one/ of our family here. She teaches the/ children in that home - Matsuda/ Mitsuko by name."

Item consists of a brown coloured cabinet with a cream coloured verso. Adhered to the recto is an image of a man, woman, and two young girls sitting in a cardboard prop of a late nineteenth-century automobile. An older woman leans against the hood of the vehicle. All are wearing hats. The backdrop to this studio setting features a landscape. Recto reads: "W. Lees / PHOTOGRAPHER (left) / 23 BATH ST. / PORTOBELLO. (right)" and the verso has "7.00" inscribed with graphite.

Family portrait with parents and four children

Item consists of a beige card with black letterpress at bottom right, "W.S. Durrer,/ Formosa." Photograph shows a man in sack coat and waistcoat with tie, holding a boy in a sailor style suit at his side. In the centre, a young girl in a dress with two layers of ruffles at the neck is seated, while a boy in fitted suit jacket and ascot stands behind her. The wife and youngest girl are seated a the right. The woman wears a dress with a fitted sleeve with ball shaped puff which dates the style to 1897. The girl wears a dress in sailor style with a square lapel.

Ferdinand, Daytona Beach Florida

Title taken from card-frame. The bull in the picture with the name Ferdinand on the card-frame could be referencing the children story of Ferdinand The Bull from 1935, made into a cartoon in 1938 by Walt Disney - this would potentially date the image from after 1938. The tintype is an image of a bull with a man sitting on its back, arms in the air and holding two guns. Another man stands beside the bull, in sunglasses and a hat. They seem to be standing on a beach.

Item consists of a brown and gold album with the text "Floral Album" on the front cover. The pages have painted floral illustrations around the photographs and gold detailing on the edges. It contains portraits of mostly individuals and a few families or group. The images were taking by companies in Stouffville, Montreal and Toronto. Handwritten notes next to most portrait, describing the relationship of the persone photographed ("Flora Powell - cousin, Uncle Dave Wellman - Half brother of 1st family.")

Florence, Ponte Vecchio

Matte print mounted on white paper, mounted on brown card with deckled edges. Depicts a river with bridge over it. The bridge has shops and buildings all the way across. Verso inscription, top left, in pencil: "N25. Florenz. Ponte Vechhio[sic]."

Frederick The Great

Lantern slide, glass B&W slide in wood frame. Image framed in black. Handwritten in ink on a sticker on the glass slide is "4318 Vue sous les tilleuls a Berlin," in french. Note that "sous les tilleuls" translates to "under the linden trees" which in German is "unter den linden," and this is the name of the street the statue is on. Sticker on the wood frame handwritten in ink "Frederick the Great." Handwritten in pencil on actual wood frame "Statue of Frederick the Great." Image is of the equestrian statue of Frederick the Great in Berlin, Germany.
