The hat is perhaps a boater hat, straw with a wide black band and trim. Due to frock coat and hat dated after 1870s. All four corners are rouned off.

Tintype is a studio portrait of a couple, potentially Mr and Mrs Neil Gardiner. The man is sitting with arm on armrest, the other in his lap. The woman is standing beside him.
