Photo postcard from Detroit

Item is a card mailed from the United States with a return address to A.T. Orr in London ON, mailed to A.S. Orr in Quebec. Cover of card shows reproduction of man dressed as sailor looking at building that reads, 'USO Service to Service Men'. Inside card on left side is photograph of young man smiling. On right hand side is text in black ink reads, 'Message, Courtesy of Metropolitan Detroit USO Photo by Crawford Robbins Photograph Committee 401 W. Lafayette Blvd., Detroit 26'. Inscription in pencil reads, 'Dear Mom, Well here I am - in all my glory??? Down in Detroit for the weekend write from 'Prevost' Love, (illegible signature)'.

Leather bound album with gold trim and the title "ALBUM" printed on spine. Metal clasp. Thick cardstock pages coloured light blue with openings for inserting cartes de visite. Sparsely populated by card photographs from Notman Studios and others in Ontario and Quebec.

Grey pages with photographs and cards adhered. Two holes in the left side of each page indicate where album was probably bound with string. Covers missing. First page has image of Old Orchard, Michigan. Most photographs feature two women and two children, seaside.

Devil's Bridge

Lantern slide, glass B&W slide in wood frame. Image framed in black and gold. Sticker on glass handwritten in pencil "Devils Bridge" and perhaps the word "Switzerland." In print "E. & H. T. Anthony & Co. New York." Image of two bridges spanning a river, in a canyon. Research showed that it is the Devil's bridge of St. Gotthard's Pass in Switzerland. It is recorded that the first bridge was destroyed by a flood in 1888, and the second bridge was built in 1826 and third one in 1958. This image shows two bridges, the original and the second which is why the slide is date ca. 1826-1888.

Bridge at Tragne

Cannot be sure that it is Tragne or Fragne, no trace of either. Handwritten on a sticker on the wood frame "Bridge at Tragne." Image of a town with a bridge and statue in foreground. Looks to be the start of the bridge, big covered archway. In BLC (white sticker facing you), you can see the ghost of people walking. Cannot find where bridge is, as not sure to the correct spelling of its name.

Image of mountains in the distance, in the foreground there's a road, trees, grass. Mount Blanc, also referred to as The White Lady (La Dame Blanche), is a mountain in the Alps. The mountain lies between the regions of Aosta Valley, Italy, and Haute-Savoie, France.

St Giles-without-Cripplegate Church, London

Image of the interior of St Giles-without-Cripplegate Anglican church in London, England. It shows the tombs of Ben Johson, Edmond Spencer, John Milton and Samuel Butler. When the church was built it stood without (outside) the city wall, near the Cripplegate. The church is dedicated to St Giles, patron saint of beggars and cripples. It is one of the few medieval churches left in the City of London, having survived the Great Fire of 1666.

[Joker]

Glass slide in wood frame. The glass slide is exposed, no protective covering. Missing the moveable part of the slide to make the illustration change. The black paint around the illustration is exposed. The illustration is a handpainted joker with a jester hat and costume, his tongue is sticking out and it looks like he's holding a big blank book that covers his body.

Glass slide. No frame. Black paper covering edges, but two pieces of glass held together with tape. Some parts of edges exposed glass. Sticker with number 15 on glass. Image is framed in an oval, and is of a young Indigenous woman in traditional dress.

Cameras and optical devices series

Series consists of camera models, from individually hand-crafted to mass-produced, and camera equipment, including filters, light meters, and timers, and darkroom equipment, including enlargers, chemicals, and printing papers. Several non-photographic optical devices are also found in this series, including two toys, a mono print viewer, and a stereo film viewer.

Watercolor outfit

Watercolour outfit for hand-colouring photographic prints. The tan cardboard box has a tan label printed with black ink: "VELOX TRANPARENT WATERCOLOR STAMP OUTFIT." Included in the box is a plastic palette and an instruction booklet with colour stamps separated by vellum sheets labeled: "LIGHT YELLOW, FOLIAGE GREEN, DEEP YELLOW, DEEP GREEN, FLESH TINT, LIGHT BLUE, BRILLIANT RED, DARK BLUE, SCARLET, VIOLET, WARM BROWN, STONE GRAY." There is an empty tray for brushes.

The young woman is wearing a blue dress and is sitting, while an older man dressed in a suit with a red tie stands beside her. They are both looking at the camera. In the midground there are cars driving by and in the background the Palace of Westminster is visible. On the back of the photograph is typed "Nuse Jill and Dad. Photo by Win, London, 1972." [Woman Milking Cow in a Field]

Item consists of a sepiatone black and white photograph of a woman milking a cow in a field. The woman is wearing a light-coloured dress with white apron and light-coloured stockings. She sits on a small bench and rests a large silver coloured bucket on the bench. She is milking a cow that is mostly white with some black spots and large horns. In the background there is 11 fence posts, with trees behind them. There is a 0.5 cm white border around the image. On the back of the photograph there is illegible numbers from a stamp.

L.S.H.LL 10 Years on General Principles [photobooth stip]

Item consists of a black and white photobooth strip of a man in a vest and tie. In all images he is looking to the left. On each frame is handwritten in pencil "813427" and on the back in the same handwritting is "L.S.H.LL 10 Years on General Principles". There is an uneven black border around each frame, and some damaged from fingerprints on the middle frame.

AZ Watson Taken at Midnight

Item consists of a sepiatone black and white photograph of a man and a dog at midnight in Nome, Alaska. The man appears to be standing on a porch with his hands in his pockets. He is wearing a long dark coat, glasses and a hat. There are binoculars around his neck. There is a dog in the foreground, at the feet of the man. There is an uneven white border around the image and at the bottom of the photograph is written "AZ Watson Taken at Midnight" in pen. On the back of the photograph in pencil is handwritten "Taken at Nome Alaska at 12 oclock at night continuous light sun set at 10.20 pm June 21st 1902".

[Jerry Sachs and the Portsmouth Baseball Team]

Item consists of a series of black and white photographs of a young men's baseball team. In one photo, the men are wearing baseball hats with the letter "P" on them, and ties that say "Portsmouth". The guys are standing in a hilly suburb park area with some homes behind them. All of the men in their uniforms are standing in a line, and there is a younger looking boy dressed as an umpire in front of them. There is a small uneven white border around the image. On the back of the photograph, someone has written in pencil "Jerry Sachs, 5 from left side". In another photo, the team is together on a grassy field with a man in a hat and tie. They are off- center and some of the team appears to be cut out of the frame. There is a light leak on the bottom right. On the back of the photograph in pencil is "Jerry Sachs, far-far left back row"

Photograph shows a young man (same as in 2008.001.159) against studio backdrop with tropical plants. Man wears uniform of the Iowa National Guard with carbine belt and insignia of two rifles with the letter "B" on the hat.

Item is a beige coloured card with photograph of a young man and two women, the women wear puff-ball sleeves and the youngest wears a belt around her waist in the popular fashion for the time. At the bottom right, in gold letterpress, "G.F. Castleden/ Old Photo. Stand/ MOOSOMIN, N.W.T." On the verso, in pencil, initials have been added over the approximate place of the sitters. The girl on the left has the initials, "E.A.C", the man, "S.J.C." and the woman on the right, "M.E.C."
